Where Have All the Good Bands Gone?

“If I had a time machine…”Well I got something to say…This week I’ve been thinking about one of my favorite bands, The Misfits. The Misfits are the newest band I have added to my list of favorite bands of all time. Back in October I discovered their greatness after years of curiosity led me to purchase a cd of theirs. Low and behold I didn’t see the fuss but I enjoyed some of what I had heard. It wasn’t until my Birthday when Stephanie’s boyfriend, the holiest of divers, Tim told me, “Dude just get Static Age its the best”. Sure enough after the first listen of Static Age I realized what the fuss was, it truly was amazing. My first attempt at the Misfits, Misfits Collection 2, was not a true representation of the greatness that they behold but my 2nd attempt was a lot better. It was from this moment on that I was hooked. I tried to alert my friends to their greatness. But as with all the music I enjoy, it fell on deaf ears. Turbo wasn’t crazy about them. Skanko had an interest but he never followed through. 1985 enjoyed them but I don’t know how often he listens to them being that I don’t live with him anymore. I spent a whole evening making Shane a 33-track Misfits Mix, which he requested, only for him to tell me “I only liked like 2 songs.” But he also said he enjoys a Simple Plan. 😛 Frank on the other hand had been a Misfits fan for quite sometime so at least I wasn’t completely alone in my new found love…

I have often always wondered if given a time machine what I would do with it. Where would I go? I have one destination now. I’d like to go back to the 80’s when the Misfits were in their heyday and see them perform live. To me as a 21 year old living in 2003 where today’s music sucks asshole except for a select few bands I crave to be apart of something more meaningful musically. I think being at Irving Plaza on March 27, 1982 would have been one of the coolest moments in my life if I was there for it. I mean think about it. Any punk or “punk” band today says they were influenced by these guys. Even Metallica are self professed “Fiends” not to mention Guns N Roses. Not that I enjoy either of them too much but still they are HUGE bands today and the Misfits were a band that was together for like 6 years recorded like 30 songs and that was it. They were gone. Just to be in the crowd standing with a band looking like this:

Must have been crazy. I don’t think I’ll ever see something like that ever in my life and it kinda makes me sad. I mean yea I love bands like Oasis, CKY, and the others but they are no where near the level of bands like The Beatles or the Misfits. They’re not influencing anyone or breaking musical ground. Its not historcial or anything when you see them in concert and I’m willing to bet it will never be. I wish kids today realized that all these manufactured bands, or “performers”, don’t mean shit when compared to bands of their past…

I mean this weekend me, Kay, and Frank tried to get into the Warped Tour. The Warped Tour is the perfect example of today’s music blowing asshole. When I went for the first time 5 years ago it was amazing. Now 5 years later it should be called the Shit Tour because the bands aren’t even punk except for the 5 or so bands that still exsist from MY ERA. They’re these manufactured Pop bands. I mean I look at my 12 year old sister and what she listens to. She enjoys mostly rap and that stuff. Why? Because its whats played on B98.5. I’m not saying I was some musically cool guru when I was 12. I mean I was listening to Green Jelly and Weird Al for God sake. But I know shes never going to have a musical identity when she gets older. I was saying to Kay and Frank that the day my sister says shes going to the Warped Tour then hell will truely be freezing over and today’s “punk” music will have completely lost all credibility. Why? Because my sister will go to the Warped Tour not for the good music or the good bands, but because its the trendy thing to do. Its where all the “popular” bands will be, not necessarily the good bands…

So Doc Brown where ever you are, Make a time traveling Infiniti I30, and let me be your Marty McFly. I long for a time when 4 guys from Lodi, NJ wore white face paint and skeleton shirts. I long for a time when Orange Vinyl was cool and you let everyone know you were a Fiend by rocking your Crimson Ghost pin. I long for just “One last Caress…”

Till next time…”Sweet lovely death. I am waiting for your breath. Come sweet death, one last caress…”
